One of the most annoying and confidence-sapping skin conditions has to be acne. Commonly thought of as a problem of adolescence, adult acne is nonetheless reported in about 20 percent of the adult population, tending to affect more women than men. Acne can manifest itself in a number of ways including whiteheads, blackheads and pimples.

Pimples are puss-filled reddened lesions or small red bumps known as papules. These papules can be found on the face, neck, back, shoulders and sometimes even on the buttocks. This type of acne is classed as the so-called “vulgaris” variety, although there are more serious forms of acne.

While there are a number of drugs and/or chemicals that can be used to treat this condition, it is possible to alleviate the problem through natural remedies. The most common acne remedies are tea tree oils and zinc.

Tea tree oil is a very popular home remedy for acne as it contains a substance known as terpinen-4-ol, commonly thought to combat the bacteria that can cause acne. It is very effective against both teenage and adult acne because it helps kill the bacteria that typically leads to pimples and other types of blemishes.

Zinc, another popular acne treatment, is a mineral that is also extremely beneficial to our overall health. While research has shown that zinc can have a positive impact on acne, many believe that the more effective treatments are antibacterial remedies. Furthermore, zinc can have side-effects if taken in excess, including causing a metallic taste in the mouth, digestive upsets and even heart problems and a compromised immune system.

Ultimately, you might want to consider a combination of zinc and tea tree oils. Some foods which are known to be rich in zinc include beef, pork and lamb, as well as peanuts, peanut butter and legumes. You might also try applying antibacterial tea tree oil to the affected areas, which is just as good as any other form of home relief.
