1. Protect yourself from the sun – Exposure to the sun can cause skin damage. Using a sunscreen goes a long way in ensuring your skin is protected from over-exposure. Make sure that the sunscreen you use is water-based and not oil based to avoid oily skin;
2. Keep it clean – Washing should not be done on a regular basis using a mild cleanser. The milder the better. Over washing is not advisable as this can cause dryness and complicate matters for already damaged skin. Some experts say that washing twice a day is sufficient; however this is really dependent on the complexity of the acne problem. Make sure that you use a soft facial washcloth. If you don’t have one, use your hands;
3. Avoid using oil based cosmetics or creams on the affected areas. People who use oil based cosmetics will naturally have more chances of a breakout. Can you imagine applying daily oily cosmetics on damaged skin? Most cosmetics manufacturers now provide water based cosmetics that are labeled non-comedogenic;
4. Keep your hands from touching your face. The amount of bacteria accumulated in your hands throughout the day, when transferred to the affected skin areas, will most certainly be a trigger for a breakout.
5. Avoid touching your acne. Some people have the tendency to feel, pinch and pop acne. Again, you are just causing potential damage to the tissue and transferring bacteria. This is also one of the big causes of bad acne scars. If you like popping acne, there are medically approved methods and tools used to do this. It is best that you have a professional examine and perform any popping you want done.
